New fish species named in honour of South Indian Conservation Biologist
A new species of cyprinid fish of the genus Pethia described from the Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot has been named in honour of Dr. Sanjay Molur, Executive Director of Zoo Outreach Organization (ZOO) in Coimbatore, India. The new species Pethia sanjaymoluri was described from the Pavana River in the state of Maharashtra in the northern part of the Western Ghats, and has been published in the latest issue of the Journal of Fish Biology. Sanjay has been a long standing member of the IUCN SSC who coordinates the South Asia section of several Specialist Groups including the Primate SG, Amphibian SG and Viper SG. In recognition of his extraordinary commitment to promoting the work of many specialist groups in South Asia, and to advancing the Red List process nationally, regionally and globally, Sanjay was awarded the SSC Chair’s Citation of Excellence in 2012
